Unusual Requests Alter Marinette Marine Design

Designing and constructing a unique and ergonomically enhanced paint building in less than 10 months was a monumental task for engineers and crews.
Governmental entities had to issue a special variance and crews were required to develop a complex deluge fire protection system in a small confined space during a northern Wisconsin w inter. But for several Wisconsin companies, these tasks were not insurmountable.
“This is the only building of this magnitude in the country,” said Kevin Hansen, project manager with De Pere-based Smet Construction Services Corp. “We had to work with the state quite extensively to come up with a [fire safety] plan that would meet the expectations of state officials.”
The site of the construction? An active shipyard in Marinette. The challenge? A new 55,000-square-foot building for Marinette Marine Paint, established in Wisconsin in 1942 as a subsidiary of the Fincantieri Marine Group, one of Europe’s largest shipbuilders since the early 1800s.
